Michael will undertake the part-time judicial role alongside his practice with SO Legal, where he has been an independent consultant since 2019.
Through his work advising and representing those involved in inquests, Michael has developed a detailed understanding of coronial procedure and the importance of effective representation, careful preparation, and clear advice.
Hamed Ovaisi, chairman of SO Legal, said:
“Michael’s appointment is a well-deserved recognition of his experience, judgement, and commitment to his work. Inquests involve difficult and sensitive circumstances, and Michael brings a thoughtful, thorough approach to the matters he handles. We are delighted to congratulate him on this appointment and wish him every success in his new role.”
Coroners are independent judicial office holders who investigate deaths where there is reason to suspect that the death was violent or unnatural, the cause is unknown, or the person died while in state detention.
Inquest advice and representation
For individuals, families, and organisations involved in an inquest, understanding the process and the issues under consideration can be particularly important. Through his consultancy with SO Legal, Michael advises on coronial procedure, hearing preparation, and representation at pre-inquest review hearings and inquests.
Michael will continue to accept instructions in inquest matters outside his East Sussex coronial jurisdiction, alongside his wider litigation practice.
